The Old Kitchen: the bed set under the arch of the bread furnace, with the lamp niche and the stove arch beyond.

The Old Kitchen

The Old Kitchen sits at the heart of Aya Kapadokya, on a landing on the way up from the Main House to the Court.

The room holds two consecutive arches with chimneys, divided by a niche with an arched top where an oil lamp once stood — completing them to three.

The larger of the arches was once the floor furnace for bread making, the smaller a stove top for cooking pots.

A timber platform was set into the kitchen as a sedir, raising the ceiling over the stairs that reach down to the Cellars.

Placed on this platform, the bed now reaches into the furnace, while across the stove a wooden top carries a mirror. Where the pots once stood, you get ready for the day, sit to write, or set down your glass.

The en suite bath is divided from the room by framed glass, hung with handmade textiles.

The chimneys that once carried the smell of cooking are today chimneys of light.

The lamp niche in the Old Kitchen: a square recess with an arched top, set between the two chimney arches.
